How to Get Your School Found When Parents Ask ChatGPT
Parents are increasingly asking an AI tool, not a search engine.
“Best prep schools near Guildford with wraparound care.” “Independent schools for a Year 7 boy who loves sport but needs strong academics.” The answer they get is a short, confident summary naming two or three schools.
If your school isn’t named, you’re not on the shortlist. There’s no page two to be on.
That is what people mean by GEO, or Generative Engine Optimisation. Sometimes you’ll hear AIO or AEO. Same job, different labels. SEO gets you listed on a results page. GEO gets you mentioned inside the answer.
I’m Emma Fell. I deliver the digital marketing module for the AMCIS Diploma, I’m SEA Official Professional Advisor for Marketing, and Attenger Digital has worked with 200+ education organisations. This is the practical version of how school marketers make sure they still show up when the search happens in ChatGPT, Grok, Perplexity or Google’s AI Overviews.
Why does this matter for school marketers right now?
Your Instagram is busy. Your open day pages exist. Your Head still asks why the right families aren’t finding you.
The leak is often earlier than you think. Families are forming a shortlist before they ever land on your site. If an AI tool never mentions you, your beautiful prospectus never gets opened.
This is not a tech project for IT. It is a content and clarity job for marketing and admissions. The schools that win are the ones answering the questions parents actually ask, in language a model can quote.
What is GEO, in plain English?
GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) means writing and structuring your website so AI tools can find, understand and cite you when a parent asks a question.
You do not need a new CMS. You need pages that answer real questions, with clear headings, facts that are easy to lift, and a voice that still sounds like your school.
Human-led, always. AI helps you draft and check. You decide what goes live.
What should you fix first on your website?
Start with the pages parents already use to decide.
Your homepage. Admissions. Open days. Fees (if you publish them). A “why choose us” or equivalent. One strong blog post that answers a real shortlist question for your area and age group.
On each page, ask:
Does the first screen answer a real parent question?
Are there clear H2s that look like follow-up questions?
Is there an FAQ in question-and-answer form?
Would a stranger understand who you are for, without knowing the school already?
If a page only says “excellence” and “community”, an AI tool has nothing solid to cite. Specific beats vague. Year groups. Location. What you are genuinely known for. What happens after the enquiry.
How do you write content AI tools can cite?
Answer the question in the first two short paragraphs. Put a plain-English definition near the top when you introduce a term.
Use the words parents type: open day, enquiry, enrolment, Year 7, sixth form, wraparound care, independent school.
Include named facts your school is happy to stand behind. Results, destinations, pastoral approach, co-curricular strengths. Only what is true and already public.
Add a short FAQ at the bottom of key pages. Three or four questions. Short answers. That format travels well into AI summaries.
Link to one or two related pages on your own site. Internal links help humans and machines.
Then check your own work. Open ChatGPT or Grok. Ask the question a parent in your catchment would ask. See who gets named. Note what those schools’ pages do that yours do not.
It’s quite simple, really. Write for a tired parent on a phone. The model will follow.
What should you never do?
Do not invent claims to “sound authoritative”. Hallucinated league tables and fake quotes will catch up with you the moment a parent visits.
Do not paste pupil names, photos or safeguarding detail into public AI tools while you are auditing. Your review stays on anonymised or public pages only.
Do not expect a plugin to fix a thin website. GEO amplifies good content. It does not create a reputation from nowhere.
Do not treat this as a one-off. When you add an open day, update the page. When fees change, update the page. Stale facts get you quoted wrongly, which is worse than not being quoted.
How do you know it’s working?
You will not get a perfect dashboard overnight. Watch for:
Whether your school starts appearing in answers to the questions you test monthly.
Organic traffic to the pages you rewrote.
Enquiry quality, not only volume. Are the families who get in touch a better fit?
Time saved when your team stops rewriting the same “about us” waffle for every channel.
Show SLT the before-and-after of a real parent question in an AI tool. That lands better than a jargon slide about GEO.
FAQs
What is the difference between SEO and GEO?
SEO is about ranking on a traditional results page. GEO is about being mentioned inside an AI-generated answer. You still need a clear, useful website. GEO builds on that rather than replacing it.
Do small marketing teams have time for this?
Yes, if you start with three pages, not thirty. One homepage pass, one admissions page, one open day page, plus a short FAQ on each. A team of one can do that in a focused week.
Will this help commercial and lettings pages too?
Yes. Local hirers and camp operators also ask AI tools. Clear venue pages with FAQs and concrete details help commercial income as well as admissions.
Is this safe from a safeguarding point of view?
Yes, when you only work with public, approved content and keep humans in review. Never put pupil personal data or images into a public AI tool. Attenger’s approach is human-led AI. You stay in control.

It’s not techy waffle. It’s making sure you’re still on the shortlist when the shortlist is written by a model.
